How much should an 8-series cost?
I have loved the 8's since I was a kid in the 90's. I think I may have to seriously consider picking one up. I don't need perfection, or low mileage. I need something that can get me to work and back on most days, that is generally awesome. How much are the cheaper 840's going for? No 850 for me, prefer the m62 over the m60, but would not be opposed to an ls1 swap as a long term backup plan...

Most of the 8's on Autotrader are around 20k, but there are some closer to 10k. Also, I hear the slushboxes were especially horrible, so shoot for 3 pedal if you weren't set on that already.

I think 12k is a reasonable price. It's one of BMWs prettiest cars I assume they will one day be valuable

I used to look pretty regularly for these, i was considering getting one as a second car for a while. The cheapo, avoid at all costs ones went for $7-10k, the medium risk ones were 11-16k, and the real nice ones went for around $20.

Be prepared for some major maintenance costs on an 850. I know someone who had one. He actually bought it new and maintained it fastidiously for its entire life. The car was driven a lot. As the miles racked up, he told me maintenance costs started approching a dollar per mile. That said, one of my favorite all time cars!
